The Blue School Project

At the end of 2024, Petra Lyceum, Healing Lesvos’ partner school, was awarded an EU Blue School certificate from the Network of European Blue Schools for our collaborative project, Plastic Free Ocean. This recognition celebrates six years of impactful collaboration with Healing Lesvos, engaging students in hands-on marine conservation and environmental education.
A European Blue School is a school, which facilitates project-based learning to engage students in marine and maritime-related topics to raise awareness about conservation issues and encourage young people to take responsibility for daily actions that affect our ocean.

Project goals

The main goals of the European Blue School program are to:

Create a more ocean-literate society where schools become agents for change and sustainability
Build bridges between ocean professionals and schools
Set up a network where teachers can share experiences and collaborate with other schools, nationally and internationally

  • Strengthen global partnerships with the Mission Blue Hope Spot network to advance marine conservation efforts.

  • Lock in the last studies required to drive the development of a marine protected area (MPA) to ensure the long-term protection of Lesvos’ marine ecosystems and promote sustainable fishing practices for generations to come.
